 best budget action camera 2021

Another year, another slew of new and better action cameras on the market! If you’re looking to get into live streaming or perhaps you’re already live streaming, you’ll want to be sure to pick up the best action camera for your particular needs and budget. Whether you’re looking for an affordable little camera to take on hikes with, or you want to spend some cash on the best 4K action camera with lots of high-tech features, we’ve got you covered.

 1) GoPro Hero 10 Black

The GoPro Hero 10 Black is ideal for live streaming or recording an event to upload later. It captures 4K at 30 fps, 2.7K at up to 60 fps, 1080p at up to 240 fps, and 720p at up to a blistering 240 fps. Using Super Photo lets you adjust your footage in-camera to capture high dynamic range (HDR) images with greater detail in shadows and highlights. The camera even features voice control, letting you access your settings using simple commands like GoPro start recording or GoPro take a photo. And because it’s waterproof without a housing down to 33 feet, it’s great for capturing action on land or underwater.

The good news about budget cameras is that they are getting more powerful all of the time, while staying surprisingly affordable. If you want to spend less than $200 on an action camera, here are some of our favourites:

When choosing between GoPro's latest models at different price points—the Hero 7 White vs. Silver vs. Black, for example—there are a few features to look out for in order to choose wisely: 4K resolution: If you want a true Ultra HD video, you'll need a camera with 4K capability. A good rule of thumb is that if your budget allows it, go for it.

3) Sony FDR X3000R

This action camera is one of Sony’s best; you can capture incredible 4K content, and its compact size makes it easy to take on your next outdoor adventure. If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to shoot live video, or you just want to share footage with friends or family online, Sony’s FDR X3000R is a great choice. It shoots in ultra-clear 4K resolution—better than 1080p HD—and it connects via Wi-Fi for real-time sharing. At $250, it won’t put a big dent in your wallet either. The battery life isn’t that long, but if you already have microSD cards lying around from other devices, that shouldn’t be an issue.

4) SJCAM M20

The Yi 4K+ boasts feature typically reserved for cameras twice its price. It’s also one of our favourite budget-friendly models, coming in at only $275. The camera has features like voice control and electronic image stabilization (EIS), which helps smooth out bumps and vibrations while recording video or shooting photos. Plus, its 4K video and 12MP still photo capabilities make it a great choice for those looking to up their photography game, as well. As an added bonus, Yi is highly regarded for customer service; you can expect responsive email support if you run into any issues with your device. This particular model doesn’t come with an included waterproof case or selfie stick, but there are other versions available that do include these accessories.

5) Yi 4K+ Action Camera

The Yi 4K+ Action Camera is a solid action camera option for live streaming. It’s basically a superior version of GoPro’s Hero 5 Black, with built-in stabilizing features to help you capture smooth, shake-free footage. The downside? You can only record in 4K at 30 frames per second—and it costs more than twice as much as its GoPro counterpart. Still, if you care about video quality over price, Yi 4K+ is worth checking out. There are tons of settings for getting your shot right. Plus, Yi’s mobile app allows you to control most aspects of your camera remotely using your phone or tablet. While many action cameras claim they have voice controls, few offer them beyond setting up and stopping recordings—not so on Yi 4K+. With just a couple swipes and button presses on your phone screen, you can start and stop recording using just voice commands. And those voice commands come from an impressive list of supported languages: English (US), German, French (France), Italian, Spanish (Spain), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Chinese Mandarin.
