It is one of few districts with an almost entirely Muslim population although there are few native Turkish Cypriots from Northern Cyprus present in Bodrum, mostly from urban areas such as Lapta and Kormakitis due to intermarriage between Turkish Cypriots and mainland Turks. This has changed in recent years. The islands of Gökçeada (Imbros) and Bozcaada (Tenedos) belong to municipality and situated north east of Bodrum Peninsula on the Aegean Sea.
